Job security is what almost people aim in their lives. Steady income, paid vacation, health and medical coverage, nice office and many more. The fact that we were raise to become an employee by our parents and our society, it is always in our DNA to look a good company and a high paying job.
But hey let me tell you this, your job is not secured as you thought! Here’s why.
The company you’re working for treat all the employee as a moving asset. Meaning, you can have or you can lose your job depending on the needs and goals of the company. If they need you, you’ll stay. If not, they can let you go anytime they want. They’ll decide.
Is this wrong? Not really. It’s just how the life in corporate world works. The management has always interest in growing the business. Remember, it is a business.
Of course you’ll always have the option to leave and look for new employer but in most cases, you’ll end up with same scenario. That’s the reality of job security. It has never been secured as you thought.
Let me share you my story.
I am working as a network administrator in one of the biggest foreign BPO operating here in the Philippines. Good salary and good benefits. Cool technology and nice office. Everything seems good.
In fact we’re allowed to work from home that makes me more comfortable about the job. Everything is perfect and secured as I thought. But unfortunately, I’m dead wrong!
To our surprise, it was announced last month by the management that our team and all other Level 2 teams on the technology side in our department will be redundated. The management decided to “outsource” our work to another company to align with its goals and probably to save more money. In short, we’re losing our job. Boom!
It was a sad day.
I can feel the sadness in the eyes of my other office mates. Some are anxious and heart broken. Some maybe get angry with the situation. Everyone was shocked!
The secured job I thought was gone. In a matter of a single announcement, the salary, good benefits, HMO coverage and everything were gone. And I prove to myself that no matter how good your job is, it is not always secured as you thought.
Right now, we’re waiting for our end date. For our last day.
Did I feel sad?
Of course yes. Everyone was. I’m working for several years already in the company and I have some sentimental feelings attached to it. I guess everyone have their own too.
Did I feel angry?
Nope. I understand that it was a management decision for the future of the company. To achieve its “goals” and I’m sure, to save more and to make more money. No hard feelings.
Additionally, we will be paid accordingly so there’s some relief with what happened.
Why I’m sharing this?
This blog has been my buddy for quite a while. It has been my bank of ideas, feelings and point of views. My digital best friend.
And you as its reader, is part of that too. I’m sharing all of this so that you can learn from my situation. Like mine, your job is not secured as you thought. No matter what, promise!
I know this is another personal thing to share but I’m pretty sure you’d learn something from this.
This is the reason why you need to build a solid emergency fund. What if can’t find another job in the next 6 months? How will I eat? Or how will I live?
This is also the reason why you need to build another source of income. In this days, you can’t just rely on your job. And good thing we have some sort of passive income coming in aside from my job. As long as you can, build multiple sources of income if possible.
This is also the reason why you may need to plan and study how you can become an entrepreneur and start your own business. So you can have the freedom and control over your time and earning potential.
And finally, this is also the reason why you need to equip yourself with proper mindset. Being an employee seems always to be secured but the truth is, it is not.
I hope you learn something from this. Until next time cheers!
